Rafael Glückstern Gardos was born in 1984 in Netanya, Israel. Rafael’s paintings are epitomized by his juxtaposition of somber themes and subject matter with vibrant colors and constant movement to create a dialogue that redefines urban landscapes and portraits with new significance through revitalized storytelling, surreal imagery, and the personification of inanimate objects. Post-impressionism, Fauvism and, above all, the expressionism of the beginning of the 20th century have influenced him the most and are always present in his paintings. Among his major influences are artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, André Derain, Ludwig Meidner, George Grosz, Otto Dix and Egon Schiele, and other more contemporary painters like Lucian Freud.

In 1987 his family moved to Alicante in Spain where he spent his infancy and adolescent years. He went on to study Fine Arts at the University of Cuenca (Spain) towards the end of 2003, eventually continuing to study at the University of Barcelona, where   he was awarded his degree in Fine Arts in 2008. Among many of the awards he received during his youth, the most prestigious was called “La Guardería” at the “14th Exhibition of Alicante Artists” in 1997.

In 2010, Rafael moved to Miami where he began painting large-scale wall paintings. After years of traveling and exhibiting internationally, he is now based in Brooklyn, NYC. He recently gained enormous attention for his large mural in the Manhattan: The Carlton Arm Hotel.
