Samar Kamel is an Egyptian artist, curator, and author known for works that examine cultural attitudes towards women and aim to transform stereotypes through their vibrant depictions of the modern woman. Since her first solo exhibition held in Dubai (Diversity, 2014), Kamel has exhibited in over 45 international art exhibitions and art fairs across Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Bursa Museum of Immigration History, Turkey.
Kamel is also an accomplished chef and entrepreneur, running a small artisan cake business. She has published several books, including a healthy eating cookbook in Arabic and more recently, two titles concerning the various facets of the female and domestic life. The first of these, ‘Republic of a Woman’ published in 2017, explores the identity of eastern women, who battle traditional ideas of domesticity while pushing for progress and gender equality. The book, termed a ‘visual treat’ by local critics, is arranged in a series of 15 short stories each inspired by one of Kamel’s own paintings. The second one, entitled ‘Her Secret Garden’ published in 2018 is an intimate book inspired by Kamel’s real-life encounters with women who have been held hostage by life-altering secrets (names and identities have been changed to protect the privacy of the people involved).
A skilled artist, Kamel indulges her passion for painting by exploring different media (oil, acrylic, nail polish, tea bags) and techniques (traditional brushwork, impasto, cross-hatching, collage, ink transfer). Having acquired her curatorial certification from the Sotheby's Institue of Art, Kamel has also undertaken several curatorial projects in her home country of Egypt as well as in the UAE, where she lives and works.
She has participated in the coveted Art Dubai, Abu Dhabi Art as an art facilitator, and exhibited in World Art Dubai since its first edition for four consecutive years. She has organized charity auctions to raise funds for the art community and marginalized members of the society. She has also served as mentor and panelist for amateur artists and art competitions in Dubai. Her contributions to art and community have been recognized by her recent nomination for Emirates Woman of the Year 2018 prize in the category for Art and Culture.
For the multi-talented Kamel, the freedom to create art in a range of forms, control how it is exhibited and simultaneously shape young minds are all forms of feminist expression of the self, that she values most highly.
